Alumni Jon Berghout Jon joined SY&C in 1999 and successfully lead our IT portfolio. Jon holds a BSc in Computer Science and Environmental Science from Trent University and obtained his CGA designation in early 2011. SY&C has greatly benefited from Jon’s vast knowledge and experience. As a QuickBooks Pro Advisor, Jon implemented all of the technology advancements (and there have been many) that we had undertaken since he joined the firm. We greatly appreciated Jon’s enthusiasm as he helped our clients and staff with their software-related issues. Jon’s extensive knowledge of corporate and personal tax, estate taxation, SR&ED claims and other interesting accounting and taxation situations made him an invaluable part of our team. Jon was born in Victoria, B.C. but has lived in Ontario most of his life. In his spare time Jon enjoys reading, mountain biking, hiking, and spending time with his family. We will miss his unique sense of humor and wish him well in all his future endeavors. Joey Xiao Joey joined SY&C in December 2014 having written her final exams and looking to finish her practical experience. Joey had a great “go-for-it” attitude that worked well with her many client obligations. She focused on our medical practitioner and professional corporation clients, handling the year end financial statement and tax preparation services. Joey provided great client service and always with a smile and enthusiasm. We wished her well as she moved to the Toronto offices of a large CPA firm. Beth Welsman Beth joined the firm in 1998 coming in with Terry Brailsford’s practice and clients, and has enjoyed working with many of our long-time clients, assisting with their bookkeeping and accounting needs. Beth probably had more years of public accounting experience than anyone else in the office. A tricky situation was always Beth’s cup of tea! In fact no challenge was ever more than Beth could handle—she adopted all of our technology moves with great enthusiasm and ability. Beth is a great communicator and took on many bookkeeping software training assignments for various types of clients over the years. Long term relationships with clients are Beth’s hallmark—she has plenty of 20 year client relationships in our office. In her spare time, Beth likes to spend time with her grandsons and work in her gardens. Her many varied interests include gardening, sewing, cake decorating and renovation work such as carpentry, dry walling, tile work and minor electrical and plumbing projects. For many years Beth volunteered with the local Girl Guide movement, as Brown Owl, Deputy Commissioner and executive of the parent committee. She remained an avid camper and scouter long after her girls had passed through the program. We miss Beth’s sunny disposition and go get’m attitude! Janet Hayes Janet joined the firm in 2000. She graduated from the University of Calgary and then obtained her C.A. designation with Price Waterhouse LLP in Calgary working in their Small Business Practice. After leaving Price Waterhouse she worked with Transport Canada as the Accounting Office Controller for the Calgary International Airport. Janet held down many important and long standing client relationships, with a focus on good service and great communication skills. All her clients loved her! In recent years Janet headed up the firms’ quality assurance program which is mandated and monitored by CPA Ontario for all practicing offices. We will miss Janet’s enthusiasm for personal tax season and her steady and calm approach to all her many client relationships. Cathy Carroll Cathy is the most famous of all our alumni—she was in partnership with Mark Scarrow from 1990 to July 2007, when she “retired” to spend more time with her family and pursue other interests. While Cathy was in practice she contributed strongly to the culture and development of what Scarrow Yurman & Co has become today. Her clients still ask about her frequently and we are happy to say that Cathy still attends the office for birthday party celebrations, lunches and just to drop by. Cathy is also an alumnus of KPMG’s Toronto office, having served in the audit and assurance practice there before working at Enbridge in the internal audit group in Toronto. Today she is indeed spending more time with her family and also is involved in various community and charity organizations. Linda Jacobson Linda retired from our front desk in 2012 having served in that position since she joined the firm in 1998. Linda took the lead role on the front desk and handled many other administrative matters for the office over the years. The firm considers the front desk to be a vital link in our service offering to clients. The person answering the phone and meeting clients and other visitors to the office makes that first and lasting impression of the office. Linda was vigilant about ensuring the firm put forward a professional face to our clients and contributed strongly to our Business Process Mapping project and our efforts to become more paperless. Linda always took a positive approach and handled the pressures of a busy job with a cheerful outlook. Linda is now enjoying spending time at the family cottage and travelling with her husband. Bonnie Trumphour Bonnie retired from our front desk in 2011 having served in that position since she joined the firm in 1998. During her years at Scarrow Yurman & Co Bonnie developed close personal and professional relationships with our clients. The firm considers the front desk to be a vital link in our service offering to clients. The person answering the phone and meeting clients and other visitors to the office makes that first and lasting impression of the office. Bonnie always handled this task with a good hearted but serious approach that enhanced the relationship our clients have with the firm. Bonnie is spending more time now with her husband and their three grandchildren and enjoys travelling and reading. She is still coming into the office to assist with our efforts to make our office paperless and pitches in at the front desk when there is a need.
